Your Kitchen the Heart of your home is a place of family times, yummy comfort food, and of course a good cup of coffee or tea. Why not have a kitchen that will last you a lifetime without further thought of what needs to be changed? Maybe you are physically fit now but you are also like the majority of your friends – you would prefer to remain in your home for many years without outside help which is costly.
The kitchen concept I have included is “one” solution for you. There are many aspects to remodeling as I discussed last month in the “core or bronze” features of Universal Design which include Functional, Visitability and is Beautiful. You can select some of the features to add to your existing cabinets and space or recreate your entire kitchen.
Most of the items noted in the drawing are simply moving things up or down in an existing kitchen which a specialized Universal Design designer will help you decide. She will work with you to remodel your space in the best way possible. A designer will also work with contractors and architects if needed to see that your wishes are followed. She will look out for your back side and become a friend you can count on.
Whether you simply decide to move your microwave down or dishwasher up the convenience will amaze you.
The Bathroom is another key area to consider. It is the core of your daily regime where you bathe and sometimes dress at the start of your day. A common mistake many people make is adding new cabinets. That in itself would be okay but how about creating a cabinet that will give you more floor space without sacrificing cabinet length? Maybe now you bump into the wall when drying off from your shower or if you are using a walker the baseboards are taking a beating as there is just not enough room to turn when entering the shower or sitting on the toilet.
The picture I’ve included is a concept I created to fit perfectly into most existing tub/shower spaces. If you have trouble getting over your tub edge and wish you could find an easier way, why not consider this renovation that is pretty simple but makes an amazing difference. Notice the level floor into the shower also known as “Zero threshold”. The level does not change or vary between the floor and the shower floor. This can accommodate a walker or wheel chair at a future date if needed. The built in seat is another convenience you will probably want. I would, as I always shave my legs in the shower and keep my shampoo items there as well.
